Ski touring on pistes

As soon as the ski resorts open their first lifts, ski tourers are also out on the slopes. This fact is dealt with very differently in the various countries, regions and ski resorts. While in Bavaria all pistes are generally available for ski touring during operating hours, different regulations apply in Austria. In Italy, ski touring on pistes is generally prohibited - this is also controlled by the local piste police. However, the individual ski resorts can lift the ban and make their own regulations, which is being implemented more and more frequently.

Apart from the legal framework, the German (DAV), Austrian (ÖAV) and South Tyrolean Alpine Association (AVS) all have rules for ski touring on pistes. Basically, the 10-point lists hardly differ. We are presenting the DAV version here, as it is the most comprehensive:

10 FIS rules
  1. Consideration for other skiers and snowboarders
All skiers and snowboarders must behave in such a way that they do not endanger, harm or restrict others in the performance of their activities.
  2. Control of speed and skiing style
Every skier and snowboarder must ski and snowboard by sight. They must adapt their speed and skiing style to their ability, the terrain, snow and weather conditions and the density of traffic.
  3. Choice of lane
Skiers and snowboarders coming from behind must choose their lane in such a way that they do not endanger skiers and snowboarders in front of them.
  4. Overtaking
Overtaking is permitted from above or below, from the right or left, but always at a distance that allows the overtaken skier or snowboarder sufficient space for all his movements.
  5. Entering and starting
Every skier or snowboarder who wants to enter a ski run, start again after a stop or turn or ski uphill must look up and down to make sure that they can do so without endangering themselves or others.
  6. Stopping
Every skier and snowboarder must avoid stopping in narrow or unclear places on a descent without need. A skier or snowboarder who has fallen must clear such a place as quickly as possible.
  7. Ascent and descent
A skier or snowboarder who ascends or descends on foot must use the edge of the slope.
  8. Observe the signs
Every skier and snowboarder must observe the markings and signalling.
  9. Assistance
In the event of an accident, every skier and snowboarder is obliged to provide assistance.
  10. Mandatory identification
Every skier and snowboarder, whether witness or participant, whether responsible or not, must provide their personal details in the event of an accident.

We wish you a wonderful, accident-free winter on and off the slopes!

Furthermore ...
  1. Ascent and descent are at your own risk and responsibility.
  2. Only ascend at the edge of the piste (FIS rule no. 7). Walk behind each other, not next to each other. Pay attention to ski operations.
  3. Take particular care at crests, in narrow passages, steep slopes and when the piste is icy. When crossing the piste, walk individually if possible or keep a safe distance from each other. Do not cross the piste in unclear areas.
  4. Always observe piste closures, warning notices and local regulations.
  5. The pistes are closed for safety reasons during piste work. There is a danger to life, especially when using cable winches.
  6. Only ski on the edges of freshly groomed pistes. In the dark, always walk with a headlamp switched on and wear reflective clothing.
  7. Be aware of alpine dangers, especially the risk of avalanches. Do not ski tour if avalanches are expected. Only open pistes are protected from avalanches.
  8. Only undertake ski tours when there is sufficient snow. Avoid damaging the vegetation and ground cover.
  9. Show consideration for wild animals. Animals are severely disturbed at dusk and in the dark.
Do not take dogs onto the ski slopes.
  10. Observe the regulations at the car parks, pay parking fees and travel in an environmentally friendly manner.

Incidentally, the 10 FIS rules apply to the descent, as for all other skiers and snowboarders.
