Cross-country skiing with a view - in the heart of the Dolomites

The Seiser Alm is considered one of the most beautiful cross-country skiing regions in South Tyrol - not only because of its sunny altitude of up to 2,200 metres, but above all because of its unique scenery: The Schlern, Plattkofel and Langkofel mountains are your constant companions as you glide across Europe's largest high alpine pasture on groomed trails during your cross-country skiing holiday on the Seiser Alm.

80 km of trails - double or quadruple tracked - offer sporty variety in three levels of difficulty: from leisurely gliding to the challenging 15 km long Jochloipe trail. The tours on a cross-country skiing holiday on the Seiser Alm lead through quiet forests, across wide alpine meadows and to rustic huts. As part of the Dolomiti NordicSki cross-country skiing network, the region is also connected to a network of over 900 km of trails - cross-country skiing on the Seiser Alm is therefore limitless. The icing on the cake? The special experience of the Moonlight Classic Seiser Alm, a wildly romantic night-time cross-country skiing race under a full moon.

Moonlight Classic Alpe di Siusi

A truly special cross-country skiing event, the Moonlight Classic takes place every year at the end of January or beginning of February on the Seiser Alm, illuminated by the glow of a full moon. Skiers race in classic style over 15 or 30 kilometres — guided only by headlamps, surrounded by silence, sparkling snow, and a breathtaking starry sky.

FAQs about cross-country skiing holidays on the Seiser Alm

What makes a cross-country skiing holiday on the Seiser Alm so special?

The area is characterised by its sunny, high-altitude location, natural snow and unobstructed views of the Schlern, Langkofel and Plattkofel. Wide, well-groomed tracks for classic and skating styles combine athletic training, peaceful alpine pastures and South Tyrolean hospitality.

Is the Seiser Alm suitable for beginners and families?

Yes. Around Ritsch and Compatsch there are easy practice and leisure trails, as well as cross-country skiing schools for classic and skating styles. The open high plateau makes it easy for beginners to get started. Families should, however, check the difficulty level, weather conditions and current trail status in advance.

Where do you start cross-country skiing on the Seiser Alm?

The most convenient way to access the area is from Compatsch, at the top station of the Seiser Alm cable car. From there, a connecting cross-country ski trail leads to the Ritsch Cross-Country Ski Centre, the central starting point for many trails. Alternatively, an Almbus runs between Compatsch and Ritsch.

How reliable is the snow cover for a cross-country skiing holiday on the Seiser Alm?

The cross-country trails are situated on a high plateau and are groomed exclusively on natural snow. The high altitude helps to ensure a long winter season, but does not guarantee it. Weather conditions, snow conditions and the latest trail report are crucial when planning your day.

Do you need a cross-country ski pass, and where can you hire equipment or book lessons?

A Nordic Pass is required to use the cross-country trails. Tickets are available from the Seiser Alm cable car and the Ritsch Cross-Country Ski Centre, amongst other places. Equipment hire, servicing and cross-country skiing lessons for classic and skating techniques are available in Compatsch and other locations in the region.
