In Germany, Bavaria in particular has a fantastic network of cross-country ski trails. Trails of up to 50 kilometres in length demand a good deal of fitness, but reward you with fantastic views. The trails lead through nature reserves or past glistening lakes and babbling rivers. What's more, many trails can be combined to provide variety on a cross-country skiing holiday.
