The high-altitude trails at over 1,500 metres are particularly impressive, surrounded by the quiet peaks of the Sarntal Alps - just a stone's throw from Bolzano.

South Tyrolean cross-country skiing experience away from the crowds
The Sarntal Alps are a real insider tip for cross-country skiers: on about 30 kilometres of trails around Pens and Asten, you can glide through a quiet, unspoilt winter landscape. Away from mass tourism, but still perfectly groomed, there are easy loops for beginners as well as more sporty sections for the more ambitious.
A particular highlight is the snow-sure high-altitude trail between Pens and Asten, which leads through glistening forests and open Alpine pastures at over 1,500 metres. Those who like to enjoy winter in the dark can look forward to night cross-country skiing in Asten, which takes place twice a week - without floodlights, but with headlamps and plenty of atmosphere. After the sport, rustic inns invite you to enjoy South Tyrolean classics such as Schlutzkrapfen or a glass of Vernatsch. The Sarntal Valley is the perfect combination of exercise, tranquillity and culinary delights.
