Nordic lifestyle in the Upper Tauern National Park

It’s truly an experience that’s unrivalled in Europe: cross-country skiing in the heart of the impressive Upper Tauern National Park. On the classic trail or skating freely, alone or with the family, high up or down below on the Tauern Valley cross-country ski trail. The unique natural landscape and seclusion of the National Park on the sunny southern side of the Alps, the clear mountain air and the 3,000 m panoramas of the Ankogel, Glockner and Goldberg Group are unmatched. On your cross-country skiing holiday in Mallnitz you’ll set off directly from the town centre on 50 km of cross-country ski trails and into the beautiful valleys of the unique Upper Tauern National Park.

Alpinism and tourism came relatively late and somewhat by chance to the difficult to reach alpine valley, which continues to retain its charm to this day. The 3,251 m high Ankogel – now a popular alpine skiing & ski touring region – was long considered to be a summit that couldn’t be conquered. Today, the mountaineering village of Mallnitz, at the foot of the Ankogel, is the perfect high-alpine homebase in the heart of the Upper Tauern National Park. There’s generally enough snow here – but artificial snow is also available if required on around 2.5 km of the cross-country ski trail in the Tauern Valley. Apart from this, you’ll encounter only one thing on your winter holiday in Mallnitz: 100% pure nature.
